okay so uh what I'd like to do this x morning is I'd like to spend some time x talking about the Book of Joshua x so this is uh this is the theme of our x first uh first portion of the readings x this month we've been in in Joshua and I x thought it might be helpful to just sort x of hit some of the highlights about the x the story of Joshua and go through some x of the early chapters the chapter today x is is the chapter about the division of x the land we're not going to get into x those details really I thought that we'd x we'd focus on a couple of bigger picture x items as it relates to the book x and I'd like to talk a little bit about x what it means in the Bible when God x instructs the Israelites to go in and x destroy a people you know it's it's a x hard thing it's a it's a subject that I x think a lot of uh a lot of people really x struggle with we you know so for example x on uh Wednesday night brother Brian just x sent me a text saying that he's going to x be leading the Bible class on Wednesday x night and is subject for this Wednesday x is Lord x the god of compassion x and on one hand we see a loving and a x compassionate God x and then we come to the Book of Joshua x and we see a God who is instructing his x people to destroy a nation x and to completely destroy living people x and that's a hard thing you know that's x a thing that sometimes uh I know my boys x have struggled with x um and it may be something that that we x Ponder and wonder about so we'll spend a x little bit of time God willing talking x about that x but let's begin if you would open your x Bibles up uh I don't see any young x people here well actually I see a lot of x old people that Sandy's raising her hand x Sandy this will apply to you since your x eyesight is so bad now that you're an x old woman you can turn on your Bible x where you can see the the font big and x large on your iPad all right so let's uh x turn on our Bibles to Joshua chapter one x and uh we'll look at the first couple of x verses x and the context here is that Moses has x died the people have been wandering in x the wilderness all these years and now x it's time it's time for the Israelite x Nation who has been freed they've been x saved from slavery in Egypt x and now they're about to go into the x Promised Land x So It Begins Joshua 1 it says after the x death of Moses the servant of the Lord x the Lord said to Joshua son of none x Moses Aid x he said Moses my servant is dead now x then you and all these people get ready x to cross the Jordan into the land I'm x about to give you to give them to the x Israelites x I will give you every place where you x set your foot as I promised Moses your x territory will extend from the desert to x Lebanon and from the Great River the x Euphrates all the hittite country to the x Great Sea on the west no one will be x able to stand up against you all the x days of your life as I was with Moses so x I will be with you I will never leave x you nor forsake you x be strong and courageous because you x will lead these people to inherit the x land I swore to their forefathers to x give them x be strong and very courageous be careful x to obey all the law my servant gave you x and do not turn from it to the right or x to the left that you may be successful x wherever you go x do not let this book of the law depart x from your mouth x meditate on it day and night so that you x may be careful to do everything written x in it then you will be prosperous and x successful x have I not commanded you be strong and x courageous do not be terrified do not be x discouraged for the Lord your God will x be with you x wherever you go x so those are the first uh nine verses of x this opening section of passages in in x the Book of Joshua x and as we read through there we see this x repetitive phrase It's repeated three x times what was it x be strong and courageous x and I think those are wonderful words x you know we think about our ecclesial x family x um x you know we've got members in our in our x family who are hurting you know who are x dying who are facing real struggles in x life right now x and while these words apply to the x Israelites who are about to go into the x promised land and into a battle of Their x Own we all have our own battles and I x think these words that are delivered x here not once not twice but three times x really apply in all the battles that we x might face be strong and courageous and x it's not a suggestion you see the third x time that it's um that it's mentioned x there and I think it's verse 8. x um x where it it says that it's actually a x command x um x where is it these verse nine thanks have x I not commanded you right this is not a x suggestion God is commanding his people x to be strong and courageous x and I guess the question is what do we x put our strength in what is our courage x based on x and I think clearly it's not based on x our own abilities x it's not based on the strength of a x man's legs x it's based on it it's based on our x heavenly father x and I think this was a lesson that the x people of the the Israelite Nation x needed to learn and it's a lesson that x we need to learn to be strong and x courageous x any comments on that what is it what x does it mean to you to be strong and x courageous I'm curious if anybody's got x any thoughts x do not be afraid x trust in God okay x Sandy you had it so do not be afraid x Gordon says trust in God Sandy x brilliant being resilient yeah you learn x from the past and like okay God was with x me at that moment x I can get through this moment What's x another word for resilience x bounce back yeah persistence x endurance yeah what did you say x long suffering yeah Genie long suffering x those are all good x yeah x Chris x not to the point of resilience but the x message that God has given unto Joshua x very similar to Jesus's last words to x his disciples too that I will not leave x you orphans x I will be with you you know and that's x very much the encouragement that uh you x know Joshua was to understand God is x with him and Jesus wanted his disciples x to understand that even though he was x going away he would still be with them x yeah x and I think that for me anyway Chris x when I think about x um x you know facing difficult times x it's a lot easier to x go through trouble and trial when you've x got somebody at your side x right whether it's Sandy or you know for x me x or whether it's uh you know the two of x you going down and visiting Julie and x Phil you know the the comfort that you x know you've got a brother who's you know x really struggling and to have somebody x come down and sit x and be there you know that's what we do x as followers of Jesus right x um we don't necessarily have answers I x mean I guess in the big picture we do x but there are times when you know we're x not going to be able to wave a magic x wand and and cause the problems to go x away x but in the long run x Our God has promised us a solution to x all of these problems and I think it's x in that promise that we can take courage x it's in that promise that we can be x strong we can endure the trials of this x life knowing x that God has promised something greater x and that greater thing of course is the x resurrection of our bodies from the dead x that greater thing is that time when we x will no longer suffer with the problem x of sin will no longer suffer with the x the you know the Troubles of aging and x the Troubles of sickness and the x Troubles of family dysfunction right x these things will be done away with the x Earth will be restored to this eden-like x environment x and knowing that and believing that is x what gives us I think the strength x Bonnie x okay so I was thinking that oftentimes x in scripture when people were coming to x the end of their lives they would x recount everywhere in their lives God x delivered delivered them I'm thinking of x David or many others and so I think when x we focus on that when we come to that x point where we just can't go on on our x own we know we've been carried all that x time so I think that makes a difference x when our minds are with God x expand on that so when you said um in x the scriptures people recount the events x where God was with them can you give us x some examples that can you think of x anything yeah he Chris is saying like x Paul you know what he x was x Litany of issues that he was I've been x Shipwrecked I've been uh let down you x know I've been in prison I've been and x it goes through you know yeah and if you x think of almost uh David before King x Saul when he's going to go face Goliath x he said you know Saul says to David how x do you know x you know how do you know that God is x going to deliver you and he says well he x delivered me out of the mouth of the x bear and he delivered me out of the x mouth of a lion I know he's going to x deliver me out of Goliath too because x it's the same God I'm not going to do x it's the same God and and Paul's kind of x saying the same thing so when he says I x am persuaded that nothing can separate x us from the love of God it's it's all x these experiences in life that he said I x then he delivered so many times and I I x know that I I will be delivered from x Death okay so henceforth there's laid up x for me at crown of wishes so yeah yeah x so so there's an example where he's sort x of recounting all the things that he x endured in his life yes yes yeah yeah x it's a very good practice to take a x journal and begin from the uh the x earliest memories and try to chop okay x the all the different events in your x life that brought you to where you are x today uh as Bonnie's saying in the bad x times and the weak times the dark times x it's good to have that too x reflect back on to say don't forget okay x you know all these all these events so x it's well-founded confidence it's not x just yeah it's not just a hope and yeah x it's a wealth found that's a good way to x put it yeah x yeah Dad x hold on a sec we sometimes have people x like as far away as Naples Florida that x try and listen to our classes so we like x to use a microphone what Chris and x Bonnie was saying is that the keeping in x remembrance x all of the Great x encouragement and x cures that the Lord God has done in our x own individual life x is in essence the antidote for being x discouraged x or being depressed x because once you make a telephone call x to somebody who is lonely or needy x hopefully you can improve their Outlook x but you're also improving your own x yeah or visiting someone in the same way x so that's the that seems to be the x antidote the the command in this last x verse 9 do not be discouraged to not be x afraid yeah be strong x so you're talking about actions that we x can take to reach out to people yes the x byproduct is that weird so we're talking x about two things then so on one hand x we're going back we're we're sort of x looking introspectively and we're saying x what are examples in my own life where x God has been with me where I can sort of x recognize God's presence whether it was x you know surviving a shipwreck as Chris x brings out or David at the end of x David's life Bonnie right and so one is x looking introspectively and then the x second is sort of to be that Avenue x where you're reaching out to people who x are hurting x yes okay yeah x got it x so I'll say x a couple of maybe it was a year or so x ago we had one of our midweek classes x and Paul Baines x um x was was uh talking about his move to x from Sussex New Brunswick to the UK you x guys remember that x and um talked about how x throughout this x time period where he and his wife were x thinking about moving they just felt x God's presence you know felt that God x was directing them x and I asked the question and it's this x question that I've sometimes struggled x with and you know personally and it's x just like you know how do I recognize x God's actions in my own life like how do x I like do I feel God's presence do I see x God's presence do I see that he's x directing me to make certain decisions x and not others x and so you know quite frankly this is x something that I've sometimes struggled x with like like how do I know I'm making x the right decision and how do I know x God's directing me one way or the other x and after that class I got a text x message x and it was from our brother Jack Rundle x right and you know Jack had been you x know he'd been at home for a while x already x and he said to me x um Steve the from my experience the best x way to recognize God's presence and it's x sort of what you were saying Sandy is x not to keep it you know he wasn't saying x to keep a journal but it's still like x Look Backwards x and it's just what you got what you're x saying Bonnie right it's not it's not x like necessarily recognizing God x directing you at that very moment x but for me x you know to think about x um x you know being a young man at a bible x school and being introduced to my wife x you know it's like oh x there's an example x right and I can see that clearly now x right and I think that the benefit of x hindsight is one that's really helped me x so I think that these are all examples x that we can take towards you know being x strong and courageous right this theme x of strength and courage is one that you x know it wasn't introduced you know here x in Joshua right this was the thing that x Moses first said to Joshua you know x years before x um do you remember where it is I think x it's in the first chapters of x Deuteronomy um x where you know he's uh instructed you x know where where Joshua is uh chosen as x his x um x Aid almost and God tells Moses to be x strong and courageous and this is a x theme that gets passed down and here we x are you know thousands and thousands of x years later carrying on that same theme x so we need to be strong and courageous x any other comments on that subject x before we move on in Joshua x anybody x okay x so the the record continues uh we're x back in Joshua chapter one x um and x as just to recap again x um Moses has died the Lord God instructs x Joshua to get the people ready after all x of these years in the wilderness to x cross the Jordan River x and they're about to cross and so verse x 10 Joshua 1 verse 10 Joshua ordered the x officers of the people go through the x camp and tell the people get your x supplies ready x three days from now you will cross the x Jordan x here to go in and take possession of the x land the Lord your God has given you x and verse 12 says but the rubinites the x gadites in the half tribe of Manasseh x Joshua said Remember the command that x Moses the servant of the lord gave you x so this is like x think telling them now go back in your x memory think about all those years x before remember what the what Moses told x you x um x Moses said the Lord the lord gave you x this instruction the Lord your God is x giving you rest x giving you these three tribes rest and x is granted you this land what's x happening x at this point in time some of the land x has already been given to some of the x tribes x they have their land it just happens to x be on the other side of the Jordan x right so they've been given their land x they're settling in they they're at x peace x and Joshua goes through and says okay x everybody we're going to get our stuff x together we're going to cross the Jordan x we're not sure what sort of reception x we're going to get when we cross but x it's likely not going to be good x and you folks that have received the x land already well we're happy for you x but you've got to work with the rest of x us you can't stay behind and just sort x of rest in the land that you were given x all these years before we want you x fighting men to get your stuff together x too and you're going to join your x brothers on the other side of the of the x Jordan so let's for contents let's x context let's go back to Deuteronomy x chapter 3. x foreign x in Deuteronomy chapter 3 we we see this x uh x this description uh of the the land x being divided so uh we'll look at x chapter three Deuteronomy 3 verse 12. x it says on a of the land that we took x over at that time I gave the rubinites x and the gadites the territory north of x the auror by the Arnon Gorge including x half the Hill Country of Gilead together x with its towns x the rest of Gilead and also of basin the x king of OG I gave to the half tribe of x Manasseh so again this is all property x this is all land on the other side on x you know this side of the Jordan x and so there's they've settled in their x land they're happy there and they've got x now to gather their stuff too and go x with their brothers into war and that's x what we read next so we're back in x Joshua chapter one x um x verse 14 says your wives your children x in your livestock may stay in the land x that Moses gave you east of the Jordan x but your fighting men fully armed must x cross over ahead of your brothers I x think that's really interesting x right not only do they need to join x their brothers they've got to lead the x way x they go ahead of your brothers You're to x help your brothers until the Lord till x Yahweh gives them rest as he's done for x you and until they too have taken x possession of their of the land that the x Lord their God is giving them after that x you may go back and occupy your own land x which Moses the servant the lord gave x you east of the Jordan toward the x sunrise x so x what sort of lessons can we take from x that x right we are a we are a family we're all x members of the one body x and some of us are experiencing peace in x life at this point in our time right x things are good we've got full x employment you know we've got uh you x know a loving spouse we've got uh you x know x no issues our health is good x but other members of our body are x struggling x and I think the lesson that I get from x this is that x when we're strong you know when we've x been blessed x we need to be willing x and able to help our brothers in need x our sisters in need x to the point where even leading the way x into you know leading the way it's not x like we just sit behind and let them x figure it out and we'll help you when we x can or if you come to me and ask for x help x I get the sense that there is this x obligation that we have x to help one another and to you know be x there and that's that's one of the x lessons that I learned from this from x the from these tribes x comments Sandy x Phil we're going to need more x microphones man x Justine and her family and Jean-Claude x came over as refugees x and the help that God was able to guide x us to give them x and I remember maybe a year or months x later there was someone in need x and I remember Justine and Jean-Claude x coming to meeting and giving what they x had oh we heard so and so is in need of x I forget exactly what it was so if I x remember correctly Sandy there was a x sister x who had emigrated from the Congo x and was in the Springfield Massachusetts x area and she was so so eager to help of x course will help and it just really hit x me to realize that x they were in such need themselves yeah x but were able to give and I thought that x was a remarkable lesson to learn that x you know to give x so here's Justine who Justine and x Jean-Claude who received help from our x Ecclesia x once they were somewhat settled they x were the first ones to want to help this x other sister who had just come with her x children from the Congo even though it x was in western Mass and Springfield x she was the first one to get in her x little jalopy of a car and drive out x with a bunch of clothes and really x provide that support and that language x yeah mark x it reminds you of um Paul's second x letter to the Corinthians when he speaks x of comfort x yeah you know the comfort that God has x given to you your responsibility x is to use that Comfort to comfort others x can you can you think of where that x verse is anybody that's right in chapter x one okay x second Corinthians I think yeah x so in second Corinthians Paul is x exhorting all of the ecclesias that he's x preached to in Asia Minor to collect x funds for the brothers and sisters who x are being x um ostracized who are being persecuted x in Jerusalem and it was this poor fund x that they were bringing back to x Jerusalem it's uh verse three a chapter x one it starts x blessed be God even the father of our x Lord Jesus Christ the father of mercies x and the God of All Comfort x who comforteth Us in all our tribulation x that we may be able to comfort them x which are in any trouble by the Comfort x we're with we ourselves are comforted of x God x that's a great verse and and so this is x sort of like x hold on verse 6. x and whether we be afflicted it is for x your consolation and salvation which is x effectual in the enduring of the same x sufferings which we also suffer or x whether we be comforted it is for your x consolation and salvation x yeah so you know earlier we talked about x like these two different x areas in which we can take comfort and x courage one is looking inwardly and x historically at our own lives and the x other is looking at how we can provide x comfort and encouragement to others and x I think that's what this verse in second x Corinthians focuses on that second area x that's a great verse Mark Chris x the microphone if you would read Romans x 15 almost we're almost quoting Paul's x words in Romans 15. you want to read x that well let's get the glasses honestly x indicated we're getting a little x but uh we then that are strong ought to x Bear the infirmities of the week and not x to please ourselves let every one of us x please his neighbor for his good to x edification for even Christ please not x himself but as it is written the x reproaches of them that were approached x thee fell on him x for whatsoever things were written x before time were written for our x learning that through patience and x comfort of the scriptures we may have x hope x but you know you mentioned the idea of x the retrospective and then looking x forward you know x by looking back and understanding how we x got to be where we are x you know we see that God has been kind x of tilling the soil in us and preparing x us uh to spoken like a farmer Chris yeah x there you go but to receive the word but x you know when you think of the parable x of the tears and the idea that you know x the seed the word of God is actually x obviously true it's just how it how it x takes in the various soils and God has x been tilling our soil by these events in x our lives to bring us to this point that x we're now receptive uh understanding x compassion because we've experienced x some of these things ourselves it takes x time uh you know for uh to travel this x journey to get to that point in time in x your life that you can see this at 25 x years old uh you don't perhaps see it x quite as clearly x as you do it 65 years old yeah you know x I think that's a really interesting uh x comment when we think about x our own life experiences and the x troubles that we have all x faced in life x you know Paul like I'm sitting here x looking at you and you're sitting x upright and there was a time when you x were in the midst of your Epstein was it x Epstein-Barr no what was it x say it again x Guillain-Barre syndrome and you were x completely paralyzed x and like I can't even in my mind I can't x get my mind around what you must have x gone through x right x and you go through that and x you must have developed as a result of x that experience and empathy x that uh is you know so much stronger x than x than what anybody else might have x um you know you've been there you know x what it was like to you know want to x move your limbs and be unable to do that x I mean it's a remarkable testimony to x you know your faith your you know the x healing power of our God x um x but you've developed that empathy right x yes it was a it was a point where x for three weeks I had no communication x and I couldn't move nothing in my body x for and I can just see out of my eyes x and that was where I got the closest to x God in my faith and my trust in him and x my prayers x and going through that just looking at x other people x suffering you know I do feel I do x understand x the trials and how it is and it's really x difficult to recover because you have to x be willing to put yourself through a lot x of pain x to get better x and that's physical therapy right yes x yeah but it was extremely painful in the x beginning as your body x relearns all those feelings x you know it's just a challenge but you x know it's it does bring your mind x looking at others and I see others in a x wheelchair and I kind you know I x understand because I was there x you know it's a challenge to get around x and have to have everybody do everything x for you in life x it changes your life changes how you x think and feel and you feel so much more x blessed now and my faith is a hundred x percent in God that it doesn't matter x what he does to me anymore I get it you x get it what do you get that he he's with x me all the time right to the end I mean x I was I will I said my prayers and it x says if this is your will to take me let x it x if I want I would like to continue on x and my cares are more for everybody else x coming to see me then for myself x at that point yeah because there's x nothing I could do or say to them yeah x so when we think about x our our lives and our purpose in life x I I think that x we as brothers and sisters as people who x have been called x have a great advantage x in that we can identify what our purpose x is you know there's so many like as most x of you know I work with a lot of folks x who are getting close to retirement x and people who are retiring sometimes x really struggle with okay what am I x going to do after I stop working x like what's my role in life I'm no x longer you know a real estate developer x I'm no longer a banker I'm no longer a a x doctor who am I x and as brothers and sisters we have a x purpose and our purpose is to be an x example to others of God you know we are x to demonstrate the character of God in x our lives we are to bring God to others x and when you think about the x characteristics of God x is said to be loving x and one of his traits is long-suffering x remember we read about this in Exodus x well how can we demonstrate to others x the character of God x if we've never suffered how can we x belongs how can we demonstrate the x long-suffering nature of God if we've x never suffered x and so we suffer x in this life and it helps us to develop x that long-suffering it helps us to x develop and as you said Paul this x Reliance on God where you drew closer to x God at that point in time than any other x time it helps us to develop empathy so x that when you see somebody else who's in x a similar situation to the one you were x in you know what it was like you know x it's and it's not sympathy it's not just x feeling sorry for somebody it's like x putting yourself in their shoes right x turn with me to Romans Romans chapter x 16. x um this is the end of Romans x and Paul is sort of concluding his his x uh letter here x now I'm not going to be able to find it x um x and he talks about x um x those who are in prison x remember those who are in prison as if x you yourself were in prison can anybody x find that I thought it was Romans 16 but x I don't see it here x um x yeah x this is example two of the not ready for x prime time Sunday school class x um anyway Phil uh Chris you're going to x say something you had your hand up I x can't find it x I distracted you sorry hailing off of x what brother Paul was speaking uh and x and then you were mentioning about our x purpose of course we never retire from x the you know service to the law that's x one thing that certainly is a blessing x that where people that's you know retire x and they don't know what they're going x to do with the rest of their lives but x of course we know we'll continue in our x service uh ongoing but the point of uh x Jesus x gives us a parable the kingdom of God is x like a scribe x taking out of his treasury things both x new and old and that is a responsibility x when brother Paul goes through a x recounting of his episodes okay of uh x his Deliverance out of all this God x delivered him and we talked about x keeping a journal it is you know very x helpful to share these experiences with x others you know as a scribe under the x Kingdom of Heaven bringing out both new x and old things from scripture that are x recorded but also events in our lives x where we've seen these things unfold and x how it helps the younger to see the hand x of God actually working in your lives so x you know going back to the idea of x keeping a journal as a scribe sharing x these events is edifying to you know to x particularly the younger have you ever x kept a journal Chris I actually started x it I remember we had a midweek maybe x three or four months back where a x brother who suffered with ADHD I believe x and how he had to use the journal to x keep him on track and so forth and it x kind of provoked me because I had often x thought and in my mind I had put x together a list of events I could look x back on in my life but I never wrote it x down but I did finally yes yeah you did x you did write it down yep that was uh x Gideon hewittson gave that class at our x midweek class yeah x yeah x anybody else keep a journal or have x historically x so I had done it for a while x um x worked so good I stopped doing it x um x yeah I kept a a journal it was something x I had on my phone x and it was called the five minute x journal what I liked about it was it x only took five minutes x the other thing I liked about it it was x a prompt where every morning I would x wake up x and I would go and sit someplace and it x would prompt me for three things x that I was grateful for x it was a gratitude Journal x and I found that it really improved my x mental health you know I I found that I x was focusing on happy things x um you know and the gratitudes could be x um you know big things x or you know I'm just happy that uh you x know I found my lost car keys you know x whatever it was right I mean it could be x silly things x and to me that was uh x you know when I hear you saying you know x keep a journal that's that's something x that maybe I'd like to to pick up again x so we're sort of coming to a conclusion x here it's it's 10 15. this is our last x Sunday school of the Year by the way x so x since Rich isn't here x I'm going to play the role the role of x the school teacher and we're going to x have two homework assignments okay x so think about it if you if you're x interested keep a journal keep a x gratitude Journal keep a journal where x you are taking the time as christed to x sort of retrospectively go through and x jot down things where you can recognize x God's actions and presence in your life x and we do this because it helps us x recognize that we have a God who is in x control x and it also helps us recognize that when x we not if but when we experience trouble x in the future x we can take strength and courage knowing x that God has been with us in the past x and will be with us to the end that we x have a savior his son the Lord Jesus who x is alive and who helps us in our time of x need Hebrews 4 right so that's the first x Hallmark assignment okay that is let's x keep a journal let's figure out what x we're happy about what we're grateful x for where we have seen God working in x our lives and maybe it's not a journal x maybe it's just something that we write x down once okay x if you want to do it ongoing great x the second assignment is to find out x ways that we can be a help and a support x to others x let's think about how we can take what x we've talked about today and put it into x action x that if we identify or if we know of x somebody who's hurting that you know we x send a text we write a card we get on a x plane and go visit somebody we drive to x their home we bring a meal x we let people know x that they are in our you know that that x we're thinking of them that we're x praying for them and that we are x Desiring to build them up x okay x anybody else have anything they want to x say before we close x say that again Genie the peace that x passes all understanding because we have x that great hope a lot of people in the x world don't have it and we could find x peace in that and that's what helps us x get through things too so what does that x peace mean to you like when what does it x look like what does it feel like what x God has promised to us and his his Mercy x he's merciful like we're not worthy of x anything what he gives us yeah x yeah x so there's that Rabbi in Newton who x wrote the book why do bad things happen x to good people x and Bob Eagles and I were sort of joking x the other day maybe the title should be x why do good things happen to bad people x right I mean we when you think about it x we all receive incredible blessings x throughout our lives x and we're really I think your point of x Genie is that we're none of us are x really deserving of it so I don't want x to put words in your mouth but yeah yeah x and so x we have this piece that sort of settles x over us x and um x we have a purpose x and it's a great life a life in Christ x isn't it brothers and sisters I mean it x just sort of gives us Direction gives us x guidance x um x and I hope that that's what we can come x away with on our last Sunday school x class that you know we have a God who x loves us who cares for us even in times x of difficulty x um and that in the end x we will walk with Christ in the Kingdom x joyous times joyous hope
